O'Neil she was still in high school year when she took part in the auditions, tried out for Canadian Idol's 3rd season within the early months of 2005. She made it into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement for her performance. O'Neil was praised highly from panel of judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was in the bottom three, and then second place. The judges were astonished at the result and exhorted fans to vote for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after numerous outstanding performances. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
