O'Grady's parents are Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, and Jan O'Grady. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of North High School of Wheaton. Prior to making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress with Montgomery Ward. She first appeared on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a recurring lead in ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany.
