O'Grady's parents are Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, and Jan O'Grady. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) and she was a graduate of North High School of Wheaton. Prior to making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress with Montgomery Ward. She first appeared on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a recurring lead in ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Her other guest appearances included shows for television, independent movies, and several other shows. Donna Abandando is her first part as a main character on ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall and blonde secretary of the squad was performed from 1993 to 1996. In each of those years, she received one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in the Drama Series. The ensemble and O'Grady were awarded an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
